What Are Trigger Point Injections?

Trigger point injections are designed to treat painful areas of muscle known as trigger points, tight bands, or muscle knots. These areas develop when muscle fibers remain contracted, which can lead to localized pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, or discomfort radiating to nearby areas.

Unlike joint injections, which are administered into a joint, trigger point injections target the muscles themselves. They may be recommended when persistent muscle tension or trigger points interfere with comfortable movement or contribute to ongoing musculoskeletal pain.

At SuperiorMED, trigger point injections are recommended to help improve movement, reduce muscle tension, and support long-term function.

Our Personalized Approach to Treating Muscle Pain

Muscle pain is often influenced by more than a single tight muscle or trigger point. That's why our providers focus on identifying the factors contributing to your symptoms before recommending treatment.

Identifying the Source of Muscle Pain

Muscle tightness can develop from repetitive movements, previous injuries, joint dysfunction, poor movement mechanics, or chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Rather than treating only the painful muscle, we evaluate how your muscles, joints, and overall movement patterns work together.

Understanding these underlying factors helps us recommend treatment that addresses the source of your symptoms while supporting long-term recovery.

Thorough Evaluation Before Treatment

Before recommending trigger point injections, our providers begin with a one-hour appointment that may include:

Review of your medical history

On-site X-rays when appropriate

Discussion of your symptoms, activity level, and goals

Physical examination

Review of previous imaging, if available

Assessment of muscle tension and movement patterns

This evaluation allows us to determine whether trigger point injections are appropriate or whether another non-surgical treatment may better support your recovery.

Focus on Restoring Healthy Movement

Trigger point injections are intended to support better movement, not simply relieve muscle pain.

Depending on your condition, your care plan may combine trigger point injections with functional rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, spinal decompression, cold laser therapy, or other treatments that improve flexibility, strengthen supporting muscles, and restore healthier movement patterns.

Conditions We Treat Using Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections may be incorporated into personalized treatment plans for a variety of muscle-related conditions.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

If trigger point injections are recommended, our providers will explain why they're appropriate for your condition, answer your questions, and review what to expect before treatment begins.

Most trigger point injections are performed in our office. Following treatment, you may experience mild soreness or tenderness around the injection site for a short period of time.

Before you leave, we'll provide personalized aftercare instructions, discuss any temporary activity modifications that may be appropriate, and explain how rehabilitation or other therapies fit into your recovery.

Ongoing Progress Monitoring

Your care doesn't end after treatment. We continue to monitor your progress through scheduled follow-up visits and functional re-evaluations at 60 to 90 days into your treatment plan.

These visits help us evaluate your response to treatment, monitor improvements in movement and function, and make adjustments to your care plan when appropriate.

When Trigger Point Injections May Not Be Recommended

Trigger point injections are not appropriate for every patient or every type of pain.

Following your evaluation, our providers may recommend a different treatment approach if:

  • Your pain is not primarily related to muscle trigger points.
  • Another musculoskeletal condition requires a different type of treatment.
  • Additional diagnostic testing or imaging is needed before treatment.
  • Your medical history or overall health indicates that another treatment option would be more appropriate.

When trigger point injections aren't the right fit, we'll explain why and recommend the treatment approach that best supports your long-term mobility, function, and overall musculoskeletal health.

Trigger Point Injections as Part of a Multimodal Care Plan

At SuperiorMED, trigger point injections are rarely used in isolation. Instead, they're often incorporated into a personalized treatment plan that addresses the factors contributing to ongoing muscle pain and movement limitations.

Depending on your diagnosis, your care plan may also include:

Functional rehabilitation to improve flexibility, strength, and movement patterns

Decompression for conditions involving the spine and knee

By combining therapies when appropriate, we focus on improving how your body moves and functions, not simply treating a single painful muscle.
